Grand Traverse Michigan Resort

Golf Heaven With A View

By John Ehle

Overlooking Grand Traverse Bay one gets a real sense of the profundity of geologic forces and what the explorers were confronted with several centuries ago. The north woods may no longer provide the vast lumber resources that they once did but adaptation is the reward of change and this part of Michigan may offer the richest trove of golf courses in the upper Midwest.

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is home to three golf experiences which may rival any resort in the Midwest. The jewel in the crown here is the Bear, a Jack Nicklaus signature course which challenges the most able of golfers. Played through and around gorgeous stands of hardwood and coniferous forests, there are abundant opportunities to use every club in your bag if you can avoid being seduced by the sheer physical beauty of the place.

Water comes into play on at least a dozen of these holes and the greens are typical Nicklaus creations which require that putts be viewed circumspectly lest one putt his ball off the surface. The bunkers around these green complexes are extraordinary in their ability to defend the pins. Once you're safely on you can be sure that you'll be confronted with surfaces that will be Stimping at 11+ or better.

In addition to the Bear, the Wolverine offers another challenge to the golfer. A Gary Player design, it is a fine complement to the Bear. For a relaxing round one can also choose Spruce Run where the Michigan Open was played prior to the opening of the Bear.

We were lodged in the Tower, a 17 story masterpiece with 186 rooms/suites which will please even the most privileged of travelers. We dined at the Aerie Restaurant and Lounge on the 16th floor and the sunset view was as memorable as the food and the hospitality. Our hosts took every opportunity to insure that our dining experience was a memorable one.

The lobby and the elevators evidenced an abundance of smiling children; proof that Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is a true family destination with something for every family member.
